The BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superstock Team recently wrapped up its pre-season testing schedule with three days at the Imola circuit in view of the opening Superstock 1000 round there on April 1st. The test was another opportunity for Sylvain Barrier and Lorenzo Baroni to try their 2012 machines following on from Almeria at the start of February.

Thanks to good weather Barrier and Baroni completed a lot of laps, which allowed them to familirise themselves with the BMW S 1000 RR they will be campaigning this year. Barrier, currently in his second season with the team, expressed satisfaction over the tests, while Baroni continued his learning curve on his second outing with the team.

Team Manager Serafino Foti declared: "It was a positive three days, we managed to make some more progress from the tests in Spain, and we found a good balanced set-up for the bike. Both riders went well and worked calmly through the programme. All this makes us optimistic about the opening round of the season".

With a few days to go before the Italian round at Imola, Max Biaggi and Eugene Laverty recently attended the Piaggio Group Americas Dealer Convention for dealers from the USA and Canada as well as distributors from Latin America. During the convention both Aprilia Racing Team riders were able to draw their conclusions after the first round of the season.

"The season started in the best possible way", declared Max. "We won race 1 putting pressure on Carlos Checa and Ducati, pushing him into a mistake, while the comeback from last to second place in Race 2 was without a doubt one of the best performances of my career. That had never happened to me before. After the contact with Sykes in the first turn I didn't think I'd be able to make it, but seeing the good times lap after lap, I gained confidence and pushed to the limit until the chequered flag came out. These are two results that paid us back for all the work we had done during the weekend and which give us high hopes, because when you start the season winning the atmosphere is positive".

The feeling with the new team, headed up by Aligi Deganello, also seemed excellent: "If it's true that 'well begun is half done', we are definitely off on the right foot. We established a good rapport right away with my new crew chief, Aligi Deganello, and with the mechanics, in spite of the little time we had to bring the new team together. It was important to understand right from the start what I needed and how the team would have to work to help me obtain it. The results of the first round give us confidence for the rest of the season".

For team mate Eugene Laverty, the Australian round was a difficult weekend: "It wasn't the most simple start. Last year in my rookie season I had some satisfying races with some podiums and the two wins at Monza, but if I want to fight for the title I'll need to be consistent straight away, getting up on the podium and winning even more races.

Regarding Imola, Laverty said: "Our rivals are tough, starting with my garage mate, Max Biaggi and 2011 champion Carlos Checa. Since I've gotten to Team Aprilia I've known that I have the bike and all the right moves to be able to aim for victory in the Championship. In Australia I wasn't able to express my full potential, partly due to an injury I suffered during the tests which effected all our work. For me the season will start from the next race at Imola".

Britain's Leon Haslam returned to the track for two days of testing at the MotorLand Aragon circuit on Sunday/Monday in the run-up to the second round of the Superbike World Championship next week at Imola.

Haslam is recovering well from the fracture of his tibia that he sustained on 20th February during the official Superbike testing at Phillip Island. The fracture was fixed with two screws just one day before the first race weekend started, and Leon successfully took part in the first two races of the season, scoring an amazing fifth place in race 2.

As the healing process is going well, he was able to jump on his S 1000 RR for testing at Motorland Aragón and managed to clock the second quickest time overall in the test, with a 1 minute 58.2 second lap.

"It was good to get back on the bike," declared Haslam. "My leg is getting better day by day. It is still a little sore and I can't walk on the leg yet, but it is a lot better than it was in Australia and it should be nearly 100 percent okay for Imola. Technical wise we got through a lot of things and we got some good information from all the parts that we tried. We did not concentrate on lap times but on the new parts and I am pretty happy with the result."

The three-day training camp for the KTM European Junior Cup concluded yesterday at the Cartagena circuit in Spain. The riders entered for the 2012 edition of the Cup, a support category to World Superbike and reserved for 14 to 19 year-olds, had an opportunity to try out the track-ready KTM 690 Duke machines, with which they will tackle the eight rounds on this year's calendar, in the presence of numerous international journalists.

Thanks to the support of the Mattighofen-based manufacturer, which sent along engineers and technical staff, and the presence of former experienced racers such as Simon Crafar, the EJC coach, and Jeremy McWilliams, KTM's racing ‘ambassador', the youngsters were able to familiarize themselves with their new venture.

Series coach Simon Crafar said "I really enjoyed the championship last year and working with the young riders. After the training camp this year, the speed of the bikes and the standard of riding has really moved to the next level. The rider field this year contains a wide variety of fast guys from various classes including Red Bull Rookies, Spanish Moto 2, Top 125 GP and other top National level front runners. We even have a European Stunt Competitor and Motocross champion. I'll have some work to do if I hope to retain the end of season party stunt show trophy!"

For his part McWilliams was surprised at the level of the participants: 'It has been really positive feedback from the riders and I am surprised at how fast a lot of them are. There are some very fast riders here and as hard as I am pushing, many are just as fast. I've helped develop the Cup bike on track and it's great to see that the level is so high on identical bikes. This will make for some very exciting racing."

The KTM European Junior Cup will make its season debut at Assen, at the third round of the Superbike World Championship, from 20 to 22 April.

Carlos Checa took pole by less than a tenth over Jonathan Rea, and Noriyuki Haga and Tom Sykes completed the front row. The most notable absence was Max Biaggi, still recovering from his Nurburgring injuries.

At the start of race one Rea took the lead, but he went wide at the first turn, allowing Sykes to jump in front exiting Tamburello, while Jonathan had to fend off Checa and Laverty. Among the other front-row starters, Noriyuki Haga had a slow getaway, slipping down to seventh. After a few corners Sykes, Checa, Rea, Laverty and Haga were able to pull away from the rest, with Rea having a clearly superior pace: in three laps he outdistanced his rivals and went on to win. His task was made easier by the fact that Haga wasn't able to pass Checa and Laverty before the sixth lap before setting after second-placed Tom Sykes. The Japanese rider was the fastest challengeramong the leaders: he reached and jumped Sykes without much hassle at the ninth lap and reached Jonathan on the fourteenth, however in the closing laps he wasn't able to put up a serious challenge, having to settle for second. Behind them, Checa was able to secure third on the final lap, with a pass on Sykes at Acque Minerali.

At the start of race two Rea again looked the likely winner: he took the lead from Laverty and stretched the pack immediately. Laverty was able to keep up with him, but behind them the fight for position slowed down everyone. Camier, Sykes and Checa battled for third and Carlos was able to secure it only after two laps. Laverty after a couple of laps started to fall behind and was caught by Camier, Checa and Haga: these three got rid of the Yamaha rider and set after Rea. Haga was the man with the best pace: he claimed third with Checa behind him, while Camier wasn't able to keep up and slipped back. Despite Haga's efforts, Rea was uncatchable: Noriyuki recorded several fastest laps, but Jonathan's advantage, more than two seconds, was never in doubt. Four laps from the end however, Rea's Honda suddenly slowed with an electrical problem: he had to retire, and a new leader emerged, Carlos Checa, who had caught and passed Haga the lap before. The Spaniard went on to win in front of Haga and Camier: three points now separated Carlos from the title and Magny-Cours was a mere formality.

Enthusiastic crowds with motorsport passion coursing in their veins, wonderfully scenic and atmospheric venues and normally great weather conditions, no matter the time of year. There are a lot of upsides about Superbike World Championship races held in Italy.

Maybe that is why we have been to so many different circuits in the Mediterranean homeland of SBK racing that have hosted races, and usually on multiple occasions. Six circuits in total, one more than any other country on the well-travelled SBK map, have hosted at least one full status Superbike world championship round within Italy.

Confusingly, many races held in the physical borders of Italy as a country have been, technically speaking, San Marino rounds, usually but not exclusively at Misano, near to the independent principality in the hills near Rimini. (This is not a unique situation, as we have had Andorran races at Jerez in Spain, and Irish rounds at Brands Hatch in England).

The most frequently visited Italian circuits are Monza and Misano, which have each hosted 40 individual races. Enna-Pergusa, on the Island of Sicily, is the least visited, having hosted only one round, way back in 1989. Vallelunga, near the eternal city of Rome and the headquarters of Infront Motor Sports, has hosted two rounds containing four races. Mugello, nestling in the Tuscan valleys that lead to Florence, has hosted three rounds/six races.

The first Italian venue we will visit in SBK's 25th anniversary year will be Imola, however, which has hosted 17 points scoring races, the first in 2001 and the most recent in September last year. Seventeen races - why the odd number? Well, in 2005, the second race had to be cancelled because of an uncharacteristic torrential amount of rainfall.

We will go to Italy three times in the 25th year of SBK racing in 2012, Imola from 30 March to 1 April, Monza from 4 May to 6 May and Misano (San Marino round) between 8 and 10 June.
