227_p01_riders_ambience.jpgAt the halfway point of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship the stats so far show that it has been one of the most even-handed championship battles ever. A nice way to celebrate 25 years of SBK racing in general, is it not? With the unavoidable cancellation of one race at the rain-affected Monza round of the championship there have been 13 races so far, not quite the 14 there should have been. In virtually every race, however, there have been multiple possible winners. Within those 13 races there have been six different race victors, from six different teams, representing five different competing manufacturers. The race winner count so far runs to Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) with four, Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) three, Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) and Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) on two apiece, plus Sylvain Guintoli (team Effenbert Liberty Racing) and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) one apiece. The race win total per manufacturer lines up as Ducati five, Aprilia three, Honda two, BMW two and Kawasaki one. All of the five race-winning manufacturers had taken a win by only the eighth race of the year; when Marco Melandri scored BMW's first ever SBK victory, in race one at Donington.Podium finishers spread the net even wider, as three more riders join the previous list of race winners. Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) has five 2012 season podium scores, Eugene Laverty has two for Aprilia Racing, with class rookie Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Ducati) also on two. There have been a total of 11 podiums for Ducati riders. In terms of Tissot-Superpole pole positions Tom Sykes has often proved unbeatable, scoring five from seven, with only Guintoli and Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert) able to oust the English rider and his Japanese in-line four machine from the top spot pre-races. Sykes is now one of the most successful Superpole competitors in SBK history, with seven in his relatively short career in this class. In the overall battle for supremacy a strong mix of speed and consistency have taken Max Biaggi to a 38.5 point lead over Jonathan Rea, thanks to a total of 210.5, but seven riders have amassed over 100 points already. With settled rules making for an even playing field in terms of relative performance, and a vast array of potential race-winning talent in place once more heading towards the final round at Magny-Cours in October, the expectation is that more and more riders will add their names towards the sharp end of the statisticians' pencils before the season round-up stories are written.

091_p06_baz_action.jpgTwo days of private testing have been getting underway at MotorLand Aragon today for those teams which have selected the Spanish circuit as their official test track, in preparation for the eighth round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship here at the end of next week. These include Aprilia Racing (Biaggi, Laverty and tester Hofmann), ParkinGO MTC Aprilia (Davies), both the BMW outfits (Melandri and Haslam of Motorrad Motorsport) and Fabrizio and Badovini of BMW Motorrad Italia Goldbet, together with Kawasaki Racing Team (Sykes and Baz) and FIXI Crescent Suzuki (Hopkins and Camier).Typical summer downpours drowned out much of today's scheduled testing and only the French youngster Loris Baz capitalized on the situation in the afternoon to gain some experience in the wet on the Kawasaki ZX-10R he has been riding since Donington as replacement for the unfortunate Joan Lascorz. The test continues tomorrow with hopes that the weather will improve.

132_r05_cluzel_podium.jpgJules Cluzel (PTR Honda) has surprised many of his peers with his pace from the outset of his rookie campaign in the FIM Supersport World Championship. Few should have been surprised, however, given his pedigree and his proven race-winning ability in other classes. A podium rider in the 250cc World Championship and a Moto2 race winner and podium placer, Cluzel arrived as a very experienced 23-year-old when he joined the ranks of the PTR Honda team in the winter months, albeit very close to the start of the season.Jules, from Montluçon in France, has enjoyed himself so far and has some great insights into what a modern-day Supersport bike at this level really feels like. "For me I was very surprised with the feeling on the Supersport bike," said Cluzel of his early experiences on his CBR600RR. "At first I felt it had more power and every rider likes this. Also, I had a good feeling with the chassis. I expected more movement and to feel the bike to be a lot heavier. But it was a pleasant surprise and I enjoyed the feeling of riding this kind of bike. It feels more like a race machine than a road machine. I tried some standard bikes but they are not the same. Moto2 bikes and WSS; they feel like different bikes. You get a lot of feedback on the WSS bike."So far Cluzel has scored a win at Monza, went third at Donington and most recently a close second behind championship leader Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki DeltaFin Lorenzini) at Misano. His latest podium put him second in the championship, 22-points behind Sofuoglu, which is not a bad place to be for any rookie. But also not enough for anybody like Cluzel who is a racer first and foremost. When asked if it was a surprise to be second at this point of the season he said, "Surprise... yes and no. Every time I am starting a championship I am not like an optimist. I am every time a pessimist. Every time is like this. I am really happy to be second but it is also my target to be on top on this championship. Every time I go on the bike I want to do my best. So I am happy to be second but I want also to try to catch Kenan for the lead. So I will try."For Cluzel and his competitors, the next stop is Motorland Aragon, in Spain, with raceday on 1 July.

20120620122131_crescent_1.jpgAfter the day 1 washout, the sun finally reappeared on the second and final day of pre-race testing at the MotorLand Aragon circuit in Spain, allowing the numerous World Superbike teams to go about their business as normal in 30° temperatures and with ideal track conditions. The Spanish Round, which takes place next week, marks the mid-season turning-point in the championship, and given the difficult conditions encountered there last year, many teams have selected the circuit near Alcaniz as their official test track.Aprilia Racing Team had both their riders, Max Biaggi and Eugene Laverty, on track together with Alex Hoffman of the test team. The championship leader focused on comparative set-up work and did a total of 90 laps on race tyres, setting quickest overall time in 1 minute 58.8 seconds, while his team-mate was six tenths slower on 1'59.4. Chaz Davies also provided vital support for Aprilia on his ParkinGO MTC version.BMW Motorrad Motorsport's Leon Haslam used a qualifying tyre but his times were not communicated, and neither were those of Marco Melandri. The British rider had a small crash in the morning while trying to avoid one of the Supersport machines that were also on track at the same time. Tester Steve Martin joined the German squad for the occasion, and a total of 287 laps were covered by all three riders, whose work mainly focused on improving the chassis, the electronics package and braking systems.BMW's Italian ‘cousins' also covered a large number of laps, with Ayrton Badovini setting his best time in 1'58.7 seconds on a qualifying tyre, while Michel Fabrizio lapped in 1'59.8 on a race tyre.Kawasaki Racing Team were also present with Tom Sykes and Loris Baz at Provec Racing's ‘home' track, both riders working hard to improve the feeling of their ZX-10R at this tricky circuit, Sykes covering a distance of four full races in his 81 laps.John Hopkins, who between one injury and another was actually taking part in his first ‘real' test of the season, and Leon Camier (photo) also made considerable progress with their GSX-1000R for the FIXI Crescent Suzuki squad. The Kawasaki Intermoto Step team of Fabien Foret and Romain Lanusse, together with Imre Toth and Balazs Nemeth (Racing Team Toth Honda) were the Supersport representatives, together with Lorenzo Baroni (BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet) and Jeremy Guarnoni (Kawasaki MRS Racing) from Superstock 1000.

128_r04_wss_start.jpgWith six rounds of the FIM Supersport World Championship gone and seven more to go, the complexion has suddenly changed. Two-time champion Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki DeltaFin Lorenzini) is making a break from the chasers after the recent Misano round, where he became the first rider to win two races in 2012.His second win of the season put him 22 points ahead of new second place rider Jules Cluzel (PTR Honda) as Sam Lowes (Bogdanka PTR Honda) was ruled out of the points scoring positions at Misano after hitting machine problems and then falling.Taking nothing away from the obvious class and statistics leading performances of Sofuoglu, the season is by no means over yet. Lowes is 30 points behind right now and former champion Fabien Foret (Intermoto Step Racing) is 43 points adrift - but there are still 175 points available for any rider who wins all the remaining races. So far five riders have won a race. Sofuoglu's victories in Australia and Misano bracket the season so far, with Foret the second winner in Imola, one-off rider Lorenzo Lanzi (PRORACE Honda) splashing to a wet win at Assen, and Cluzel scoring his first victory in round four at Monza. Lowes took a popular home win at Donington before a mini-break in the season, and before Sofuoglu put in another great performance at Misano. Kenan has been only off the podium once, when injured and then excluded from the results at Imola in round two.The competition on paper right now is a straight fight between the top two Hondas and top two Kawasaki riders, but in reality the opportunities for riders on Yamaha and Triumph machinery are just as great. In only six races nine different riders have posted podium finishes - all those aforementioned plus Alex Baldolini (Power Team by Suriano Triumph), Broc Parkes (Ten Kate Racing Products Honda), Ronan Quarmby (PTR Honda) and Vladimir Leonov (Yakhnich Motorsport Yamaha). The podium count per manufacturer stands at Honda nine, Kawasaki seven, and Yamaha and Triumph with one each.In terms of pole positions Honda riders have been hogging all the pre-race limelight, with Parkes (one), Lowes (four) and Cluzel (one) scoring best in qualifying. How all these statistics and the balance of power between riders, teams and manufacturers changes in the next few months cannot be predicted. Not in such a close category with a history of upset and change. The one constant we can expect to see is tooth-and-nail competitive spirit all the way from first to last place.
