1-12-checa-wdw2012xsito.jpgDucati's massive World Ducati Week 2012 got under way Thursday with thousands of fans from all over the world arriving at the Italian manufacturer's mega-event at the Misano World Circuit in Misano Adriatico. The event, which runs from 21-24 June, attracts huge numbers of passionate followers who rode in as soon as the gates of the Misano circuit opened. With 60% of WDW-goers from Italy, an impressive 40% of international visitors highlights the global power and appeal of the Ducati brand. Ducatisti are expected to flock in from Europe, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and India and as far away as Brazil, China and Malaysia, all united by the common passion for Ducati and motorcycling.Ducati have taken on a massive logistical challenge to organise such a packed programme for this year's four-day event, with the action taking place at the Misano circuit during the day and in nearby Cattolica, Misano and Riccione by night.Yesterday's track action included Carlos Checa making a surprise first test on the 1199 Panigale Superbike, the World Superbike Champion giving valuable feed-back in the brand new model's preparation. On Saturday, Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden from the MotoGP team, three-time WSBK champion Troy Bayliss, and current Ducati Superbike riders Carlos Checa, Davide Giugliano, Sylvain Guintoli and Jakub Smrz will all be at WDW2012 to meet the fans, sign autographs, ride the track and then do battle in the Diavel Drag Race along the Misano World Circuit start/finish straight.

009_p03_barrier_action.jpgAlways considered a class for youngsters eager to make their name on the world scene, the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup will be reaching its halfway point - five rounds out of 10 - at MotorLand Aragon in Spain next week. The category is always an ideal arena for under-26 year olds to show their talent, and it is not by chance that Superstock 1000 in recent years has thrown up a number of riders who are now firmly established on the Superbike World Championship scene. These include riders of the calibre of Ayrton Badovini (2010 champion for BMW Motorrad Italia) and Davide Giugliano (last year's winner for Ducati Althea), as well as Maxime Berger, Niccolò Canepa, Lorenzo Zanetti and, last but not least, Loris Baz, who has become a factory Kawasaki Superbike rider.Hoping to follow in their footsteps, the current protagonists of the FIM Cup have given life to four nail-biting races, and the most likely candidate for overall victory is Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet). In winning three of the four rounds held so far (Imola, Assen, Misano), the young Frenchman more than made up for his ‘no-score' at Monza (due to an injury to his left shoulder), but his momentary stop has also given some hope to his key rivals. The first name on this list is Lorenzo Savadori, the former European and Italian 125 GP champion, who is just 11 points away from the top on his Barni Racing Team Italia-prepared Ducati 1199 Panigale. Winner at Monza, and the first man to take the new Ducati sportbike to victory, the Italian has now been caught by his team-mate Eddi La Marra, poleman at Imola on his debut with Ducati. La Marra is third on 61 points and has missed out on the podium only once, at Misano Adriatico. The promising young German Markus Reiterberger has still to step on the podium and is fourth overall with an alpha Racing BMW, but he is rapidly being hauled in by two men who have tasted the champagne: Lorenzo Baroni (runner-up at Misano with BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet, but unlucky in the first three rounds) and the surprising Swede Christoffer Bergman, who finished third at Monza with a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R of the BWG Racing team.As the second half of the season approaches, the jury is still out on Australian Bryan Staring, capable of scoring an exceptional 10th place in Superbike race 1 at Phillip Island as replacement for the injured Leandro Mercado (another product of the Superstock 1000 ‘nursery') and Fabio Massei (Honda EAB Ten Kate Junior Team). Meanwhile the former European Superstock 600 champion Jeremy Guarnoni, has since Misano returned to MRS Racing Kawasaki as replacement for Loris Baz, who has already shown considerable prowess in Superbike; further confirmation that the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup is increasingly becoming a training-ground for future World Superbike champions.

290_p05_guintoli_box.jpgSylvain Guintoli (Team Effenbert Liberty Racing) achieved another career ambition in 2012 when he won his first race in the eni FIM Superbike World Championship, but since his 1-2 at the Dutch circuit the flying Frenchman feels the only thing that has deserted him and his team recently is good fortune. Now seventh in the championship, having been as high up as third, Guintoli knows he and his bike have what it takes to fight for podiums on a virtually regular basis, as he explains. "It seems since the start of the year - even at the end of last year when I was feeling fit and feeling good - that the bike suits me and the team is working well with me. For 2012 nothing has changed, just a bit more weight on the bike. Not much else has changed. From the start of the year we have shown a lot of speed, especially in Superpole."But it's not speed but simple fortune Sylvain feels is missing. "In the races - and it is easy to say that it is just down to bad luck - but we have hardly had any luck since the start of the year. In Australia we got on the podium in the first race, then - my fault - I crashed in race two. Then at Imola I was very fast then Leon Haslam took me out in race one and I hurt myself, so even though I did race two and I was not feeling good at all. Assen was fine, good, a very good weekend with a first and then a second place."After that however, things started to go slightly off beam. "In Donington somehow the Ducatis were not as strong as we expected, so we got an eighth and a fifth but I was always with Carlos and the other Ducati guys. In America I did struggle, could not find the pace and we had trouble with the qualifying tyre during Superpole 3. Over the length of the race I was struggling too much with the speed of the bike and could not compensate. I was fighting with guys and could not get rid of them. In Misano I had a lot of speed but then I crashed in Superpole, which for sure would have been a first row otherwise. In race one I got involved in a contact with Carlos, ran off and restarted last or not far from it, then ran off again. In race two I started well and said OK, I am going to settle, but then Melandri took me out. There were a lot of races where we could have scored a lot of points but our luck has been ridiculous, incredible, and it has to turn around at some point, because it is not right!"Sylvain's main consolation is the fact that despite the twin cylinder machines having an extra six kg to lug around in 2012, his bike package and team is top notch, elements which have helped him climb to victory already. "I am not worried. I suppose that it has been better to have had the pace and no luck than have only got some results just based on luck." He continued, "I can use the bike really well. I am also making some much better starts. I find it hard when fighting with the other guys, because the strong points of our bike... you cannot really use them because you get stuck with them. When you are on your own you can do what you know what you can do with that bike. So from now on I must get every holeshot and head off on my own, or something! In Superpole I always go off on my own, I do not like to ride with somebody in front because it does my head in!"
