010_p08_lowes_action.jpgAt the end of a volatile and endlessly dramatic Supersport race at MotorLand Aragon last weekend the Supersport World Championship contest re-ignited at the top of the table. Championship leader Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Lorenzini) crossed the line first in the delayed race but was penalised mid-race and eventually demoted to fifth, meaning that Sam Lowes (Bogdanka PTR Honda) took his second win of the year. The circumstances of the end of the race, with Sofuoglu penalized but not taking his penalty, left Lowes with a decision to make and it subsequently proved to be the right one. To not try to pass the double champion as he did not need to. "It was difficult in the end because I knew Kenan had a penalty and I was actually in first position but I rode my race and it was good," said Lowes.Sam, still only 21, was eager to race in Aragon from the get-go, especially to try and put the memories of terrible Misano round - which his bike issues and then a fall ensured he would score no points - behind him. "Already yesterday I knew I had a good race pace and just needed to get a good start from fifth and then hang in there. I just put my head down and got into my rhythm. I took my time because I knew it was going to be a long race."For Lowes, who was so desperately down after Misano, Motorland offered him more than just the prospect of making up more championship ground to Sofuoglu, and with plenty of races left in the 2012 season still. "We're back in second overall, and I'm looking forward to fighting for more victories and the championship. We've got Brno next which I like a lot and Silverstone which is my second home race, so I'm really looking forward to that."At present Sofuoglu is 16 points ahead of Lowes with six rounds left, while Jules Cluzel (PTR Honda) and Fabien Foret (Kawasaki Intermoto Step) are 33 and 34 points respectively behind Sofuoglu.

For Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) his latest win on the official S1000RR was not only another personal triumph, it was further proof that the game could be taken to race one winner Biaggi after all, even at a circuit with such a fast straight as Aragon. The Spanish track was a bit of a playground for the Aprilias, but Melandri was the only rider able to stick with Biaggi in race one, then lift his game to win the second race, in what ended up being a classic contest in all ways for Marco.

He also saw Laverty and Davies head up Biaggi and bring the championship points lead to a more manageable 48 after race two. It had been a whopping 60 after race one, and looking like it would grow even more.

"It was not easy because the wind was very strong and the Aprilia guys were pushing hard. In the beginning, Max could not go as fast as in race one and for me it was similar. Eugene was very fast and suddenly with only a few laps to go, Max overtook me. I passed him back but went wide and so Chaz and Eugene went past me. They were riding so strongly and so fast that it was not easy. For the last lap I had no plan, because when racing against those guys you cannot think about a plan because they try to pass you at every corner so I just tried to find a good place for braking at the end of the straight. To win was so amazing."

One day after the MotorLand race Melandri, like many of his peers, put a foot into the future when he evaluated the new generation of 17-inch Pirelli tyre and alloy wheel combos that will become mandatory in 2013, as well as trying out settings on the current 16.5 tyres in readiness for the next round at Brno. "It was interesting to ride the new 17-inch tyres," said Melandri. "It was a completely different feeling from the usual Pirelli tyres we race now. The bike characteristics look more precise. For sure we still have a lot of work to do with the tyre but also with the bike to find a good set-up for this kind of tyre. I hope this is just the starting point and that I will be able to test the new solution before the end of the year just to understand which direction we need to take for next season. Overall it was a positive day and I am happy and actually I cannot wait to go to Brno."

564_r07_badovini_grid.jpg

After a difficult start to the season, Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet SBK Team) has upped the ante in the two recent rounds at Misano and MotorLand Aragón, and is once again back at the form expected from him by the team at the start of the year. A fifth place in race 2 on the Italian track and an encouraging performance in race 1 at Alcañiz, which unfortunately concluded with a crash on the last lap while he was fighting for third with Tom Sykes, have in fact been a boost to the Italian.

"In the first part of the season - admitted Badovini - we worked to find a standard level of performance that was at least in line with that of the second half of 2011, but some bad luck and difficulty in getting the right set-up, meant we were unable to do so. From Misano onwards however we've taken a new direction in set-up and have managed to find a balance that has enabled me to make a good step forward in terms of performance".

With six rounds still remaining this year Ayrton's aim is to tackle them head on, knowing that a good opportunity will come right away with the next round at Brno on 22 July. "In the last couple of rounds we've been fighting up at the front and when this happens even the way in which you face up to the challenges ahead change, and now we can have an attacking approach to the weekend. Last season I went well at Brno, a track I like a lot, and I'm sure that the bike will go well there, seeing as the engine has improved a lot on this new version of the S 1000 RR".

369_r08_laverty_action.jpg

Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team) started the season as one of the favourites to post a top three in the eni FIM Superbike World Championship overall. Fast from the first moment that he tested the Aprilia machine at Portimao last winter, his early results were good but not great, until two podiums at Assen and Monza put him back into the groove again. From then on things started to go wrong, as one key element on the electronics package of his bike started to play up, and his ‘home' round at Donington was nothing like he had hoped, with a DNF and a 15th place overall.

"The big change was between Monza and Donington," he explained to WorldSBK.com. "We left Monza knowing we were in a position to move forward in the championship race and it was a big shock that lasted for three rounds. I really could not get out of turns. When we went to the Aragon tests to have a reference - same track we tested at in March - it was clear that something was wrong with the bike after just two or three laps. We put our heads together and it took all of five or ten minutes to find out what the problems was, which was frustrating in a way. I went back out again and it was back to business, so I could have left the test after three laps. The bike had thought it was wheelying all the time, a similar problem to what we had in Donington race one, even though that was an extreme case of it. It was cutting power before the bike was wheelying, which then in turn created more wheelie. It had been such a big problem it had been losing me 0.75 or a second a lap, and you cannot give that away to your rivals in SBK, especially when Max Biaggi is your team-mate."

It was a bad time to find a problem that proved difficult to diagnose, with the season getting into its full swing. "What is really eating me is that we left Monza and I had raved about the electronics aspect of the bike, that it was our strongest area, and knowing what we were capable of. Then I feel we got robbed of a championship challenge because we went from 30 points behind to 110, just like that. It ruined my season, that is the long and the short of it, and I am not best pleased. The engine has got to be the strongest area but as a whole the package is great, so to be restricted in that way, not to be able to use the engine power from the Aprilia, means I could not get out of the corner and overtake people. I was getting desperate trying to overtake and it was like a yo-yo effect. They would go away and I would pull them back and I then knew there was a problem because at this level you should be able to follow other riders wheel for wheel."

With this problem solved Laverty is now ready to shoot for his first Aprilia win, having taken two when riding for Yamaha in 2011. "I will still try for top three in the championship but that is not my concern right now. I just want to win as many races as possible. With the bike we have I reckon we can have a good shot at it. I want to win a lot of races."

After splitting with his British Superbike team earlier this week, the talented Frenchman Florian Marino is reported to be returning to the World Supersport paddock for the rest of the season with a brand-new team. The 19-year-old from Cannes in France, who made a good impression when he raced in Supersport with HANNspree Ten Kate Honda in 2011, will line up at the next round with Kawasaki MSD R-N Racing Team India, which makes its debut at Brno. The new team however will be provided with considerable input for the rest of the season by the experienced Andrew Stone, currently Fabien Foret's crew chief in the Kawasaki Intermoto Step team.

Stone will remain with the Intermoto team for the rest of the season, and is then in line to take over the role of technical director for the new Indian team in 2013. The aim is to boost motorsport in the country in a season that will see the first-ever Indian Round of the calendar take place on March 8-10 at the Buddh International Circuit on the outskirts of Delhi.

At Brno the team will only race with Marino, but from Silverstone onwards he will be joined by Britain's Dan Linfoot, who is currently recovering from a hand injury.
