WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 7. August 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 7. August 2012 Giorgio Barbier (Racing Director Pirelli Moto) analyzes the tenth round of the year, held at the Silverstone circuit in the UK. "We knew that the weekend on English soil might hold some surprises for us due to the particularly unpredictable weather, and that is exactly what happened. In fact, the English summer proved to be particularly treacherous for the riders who had to face extremely demanding racing conditions due to the periodic rain showers on the track. Despite the adverse weather we can definitely consider ourselves to be very satisfied with the solutions we brought to Silverstone. In Race 1 for the Superbike class we had further confirmation of the quality and versatility of the rear R302 solution in SC1 compound which was used by most of the riders for the first start. Not only that, but for the second start of Race 1 some of the riders gambled on a wet tyre even if there were no optimum rain conditions to justify using it and, in spite of this, they were able to finish the race. Race 2 was naturally ridden by all the riders on wet tyres which confirmed their excellent performance when used in the rain, the very purpose for which they were designed. There was definitely no lack of show and, once again, Superbike showed that it is a Championship where any rider has the potential to win. This weekend belonged to Loris Baz and the Kawasaki Racing Team, whom I would like to compliment, but also other outsider riders such as Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini with Team BMW Motorrad Italia Goldbet. There are just four races left until the end of the Championship, but the general standings are anything but decided. Anything can still happen and it will be interesting to see who is able to prevail over the rivals." WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 7. August 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 7. August 2012 In what can be described as a ‘historic victory', the 19 year-old from France Loris Baz scored a win in just his eleventh race in the top category, thus becoming the second youngest rider ever to do so. At the age of 19 years, 6 months and 4 days he is preceded only by Yuichi Takeda, the wild-card rider who won at Sugo in 1996 at 18 years, 8 months and 27 days of age. European Superstock 600 champion in 2008, and earlier this year a regular competitor in the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup, Baz took the Kawasaki ZX-10R to its second win of the season, showing exceptional control in the scarce grip conditions, and he followed that up with a second place in race 2 despite crashing just before the red flags came out. "It is really special to win and to win in England because I raced here in BSB last year for a while. I would also like to thank Kawasaki for believing in me. We made no mistakes in race one and finished up front. I think in the dry we are also really fast and we can fight for the first five or seven places. I chose the slick tyre because it was the best choice in race one. The conditions in race one were crazy for a while and early on I was missing some grip but when I saw the rains coming I pushed hard even though it was quite wet but I stayed on the bike and I am really happy, as you can imagine, for this victory." Determined to do the same in race 2, the youngster from Sallanches soon made his way to the front but once he had passed Guintoli in the lead he crashed out at the Complex. Luckily the red flags handed him back his second place, his third podium in the last four races. "The start of race two was not so wet so I just tried to keep my tyres, and then it started to move back up to Kuba and Sylvain, passed them both and them before falling, I think it was the right decision to take the race results back to lap eight because there was a lot of fuel on the track for two laps, and a lot of water. I am really happy and thanks to all my crew and Kawasaki again." As well as thanking his team and Kawasaki, Baz also wished to dedicate the win to Joan Lascorz, the unlucky rider whom he replaced in the Kawasaki Racing Team following the Spaniard's Imola crash on April 2. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 8. August 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 8. August 2012 Sylvain Guintoli couldn't have dreamt of a better start to his WSBK adventure with the PATA Racing Team on Sunday as he powered to the win in race 2 of the UK Round at Silverstone. For the Frenchman, this was his second win of the year on a Ducati 1198, his first having been achieved at Assen, in similar wet conditions, with the Effenbert-Liberty Racing team. Having concluded his collaboration with the Italo-Czech squad at Brno, Guintoli didn't take long to step up to the mark with the Italian team run by Daniele Carli. Third in the Tissot-Superpole, he made an error in race 1 by starting on wets when the track was virtually dry in the early stages, but after the break he powered to a convincing win to put behind him the recent difficult period. "What a day and what a last couple of weeks actually! It's been an up-and-down road and after Brno it was a difficult experience but I just bounced back quickly with the PATA team and this Ducati. All weekend it's been going well really, except the first race where I made the wrong choice and I went from zero to hero! I was really angry with myself and decided to start fast, hammer it down and see what happens. I was feeling good, and saw that nobody was behind. When the rain came back I eased off, I didn't want to make a mistake for a podium and be a zero to zero! Loris came back, we were looking at each other because the conditions were quite tricky. So it was the first win for me and the PATA team and hopefully there'll be many more to come." With this win Guintoli moves into eighth overall on 122.5 points despite two no-scores in the previous round at Brno. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 8. August 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 8. August 2012 WorldSBK.com provides a quick round-up of the facts and figures from the tenth round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship at the Silverstone circuit in the UK. RACES • Maiden career win for Loris Baz, the second youngest winner in Superbike history at the age of 19 years, 6 months and 4 days: in front of him is only Yuichi Takeda, the wild-card rider who won at Sugo in 1996 at 18 years, 8 months and 27 days of age. Loris scored his first win in his eleventh race, like Carlos Checa, back in 2008, in Miller; • Baz is the second French winner this year after Guintoli in Assen: it's the first time in history that two different French riders are able to win in the same season. The other French winners are Raymond Roche (23 wins from 1989 to 1992), Regis Laconi (11 from 2001 to 2005) and Adrien Morillas, who won the first race for Kawasaki at the Hungaroring in 1988, race two; • Kawasaki with this win takes the clock back to its best years: they haven't won two races in the same season since 2000, when Izutsu won the two rounds in Sugo; without considering the races run in Japan, to find a similar or higher number of season wins, we have to go back to 1996, when Anthony Gobert won the second race in Laguna Seca and both rounds in Phillip Island with the ZX-7RR; • Kawasaki scored eleven podiums this year, a value they reached for the last time in 1997, when they counted twelve, scored by Simon Crafar and Akira Yanagawa; • In race two Loris Baz posted his maiden fastest lap and became the youngest ever to do so: he beat by almost two years Anthony Gobert, who was 21 years 4 months and 6 days old when he recorded his first fastest lap in Laguna Seca, 1996, race one; • 34th career podium for Michel Fabrizio, who hasn't been able to finish on the rostrum since Monza last year, race two; • Maiden career podium for Ayrton Badovini, in his 75th race: he has been waiting for a podium finish since the 2010 Superstock 1000 race held in Magny-Cours. The Italian also posted his maiden fastest race lap; • The podium of race one is the tenth youngest in history: Baz, Fabrizio and Badovini combined for an average age of 24 years, 6 months and 9 days. The record was set in Laguna Seca in 1995 in race two, when Troy Corser, Anthony Gobert and Mike Hale had an average of 22 years, 2 months and 16 days. This fact is even more curious if we consider that only four races ago, in Aragon, race one, Biaggi, Melandri and Checa recorded the fifth oldest podium, with an average of 36 years, 10 months and 16 days. On this side of the chart, the record was set in Misano 2010, race one, with Biaggi, Checa and Corser (38 years, 5 months and 4 days); • In race two Sylvain Guintoli scored his second win after the one in Assen, completing a great day for France, and taking their wins tally to 38, two more than Spain. At the top of the chart Australia and United States, with 118 wins each; • Fifth career podium, and first of the season, for Jakub Smrz, third in race two; • The crash in race one put an end to a string of nineteen races in the points for Max Biaggi. Max doesn't have a great feeling with this track: it's the only one in the 2012 calendar, together with the Nurburgring, in which he has never finished on the podium; • First top-10 placement of the season for John Hopkins, tenth in race two; QUALIFYING • Third career pole for Jakub Smrz after Misano 2009 and Miller this year. Now the Czech rider counts the same number of poles as Jonathan Rea. Amongst current riders, only Sykes (9 poles) and world champions Checa (8) and Biaggi (4) have more pole positions. This was Ducati's 160th pole: the Italian manufacturer leads the chart in front of Honda (44); • Best career qualifying result for Leon Camier, second on the grid. Up to Silverstone the British rider had scored a third in Aragon and Silverstone last year. A Suzuki didn't qualify on the front row since last year's Silverstone races, when Hopkins set pole here. For Suzuki this was the 70th race with at least one bike on the front row; • For the first time this season, Tom Sykes didn't qualify on the front row (8th). WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 9. August 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 9. August 2012 At this crucial stage of the season, Frenchman Jules Cluzel (PTR Honda) returned to the winners' podium last Sunday at Silverstone by notching up his second victory at the British circuit following the one he had already obtained there in Moto2. The PTR team youngster had a perfect weekend: pole position (his third in World Supersport) on Saturday and then a race win at the end of a spectacular duel with his fellow PTR man Sam Lowes on the Bogdanka Honda machine. Starting from pole, the 23 year-old from Montlucon administered the situation behind Lowes until lap 15 and then made the decisive attack on the Brit on the final lap to take his second win of the season (and the 90th for Honda) after the one he scored at Monza. "That was a hard race but I had my race plan I wanted to do and I stuck to it," he declared. "I drafted Sam on the last lap but then he came back at me on the final corner and we touched, it was very close. I am pleased to win and also very happy to enjoy racing here and the feeling I have with my PTR Honda. It is good for us in the Championship as well, I am happy to be third again and close in on the riders in front." With the 25 points from Silverstone, Cluzel is now just 28 behind leader Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Lorenzini), and is rapidly closing in on the top slot as World Supersport heads to Moscow for the next round. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 9. August 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 9. August 2012 The UK has often been thought of as the home of motorsport, and that is certainly the case when it comes to the Superbike World Championship. The many famous names who have written memorable chapters in WSBK history clearly include James Whitham and Chris Walker, who were inducted into the SBK Hall of Fame at Silverstone just a few minutes before race 1. James Whitham, born in Huddersfield in 1966, is widely recognized as being one of the most versatile riders in the sport throughout the 1990s. He rode in the TT, British Superbike and the World Championship, but is above all famous for a long and successful career in World Superbike and Supersport. In the top class, where he mainly raced for Moto Cinelli Ducati and the works Suzuki team, he has 92 starts to his name, with 8 podiums and 1 win, which came at Sentul in 1994 on a private Ducati 916. After his SBK experience, Whitham stepped down to Supersport, where he scored 4 wins and 12 podiums in 34 races with Yamaha Belgarda, before being forced to retire due to a glaucoma. "Jamie" then became one of the commentators for British Eurosport, where his experience and technical know-how is an added value for the International commentary team. Unlike Whitham, Chris Walker is one rider who is still going strong and at the age of 40 he actually won a British Superbike race in May at Oulton Park with the Pr1mo Bournemouth Kawasaki team. Three-times BSB runner-up, "The Stalker" was a constant figure in World Superbike from 2002 to 2008 (with the sole exception of 2007 when he returned to BSB), racing with Ducati GSE, Foggy Petronas and Kawasaki. And it was with the PSG-1 entered ‘Green Machine' that Walker scored his first and only win in WSBK at Assen in 2006, the last one for the Akashi manufacturer until Tom Sykes put the bike on the top slot last year at the Nurburgring. Walker raced a total of 148 times in WSBK (plus 8 in Supersport), finishing on the podium 12 times. On returning home in 2009, he diversified activities away from the track, first as ambassador and sales manager for Norton Motorcycles, and then as owner of the Chris Walker Race School, whose most recent ‘discovery' is Lee Jackson, a youngster who took third place at Silverstone on Sunday in the Superstock 600 category. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 10. August 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 10. August 2012 Jaypee Sports International Limited, the Buddh International Circuit promoter, has acquired the exclusive TV rights from Infront Sports & Media, the organizers of the FIM Superbike World Championship, for live transmission of the Indian round of the championship to be held in March 2013. The deal licenses JPSI to resell the TV rights of the main race along with the support races to the Indian broadcasters. The four-year contract, which covers Indian Territory and goes into effect till 2016, will also permit JPSI to resell the non-exclusive TV rights to the broadcasters for other non-India WSBK races. Commenting on the development, Sameer Gaur, MD & CEO, JPSI, said: "We are delighted with the deal as this will help generate additional revenue apart from sponsorships. Post the F1 Indian GP, the popularity of motorsport has increased many folds in India and with WSBK also coming to BIC early next year, it is going to increase further." Paolo Flammini, CEO of Infront Motor Sports, said: "We are pleased that such a prestigious partner as Jaypee Sports International, which has committed itself to the organization of the Indian Round of the Superbike World Championship from 2013 to 2016, is also directly involved in the administration of the television rights of the championship throughout India. We are certain that this collaboration will bring about a major increase in awareness for World Superbike." WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 10. August 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 10. August 2012 At the start of the season the prospect of Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) challenging for the championship itself on the fast but fickle S1000RR race bike seemed a remote one to some people, even inside the SBK paddock. The credentials of all involved in the 2012 BMW effort, from Melandri and his team-mate Leon Haslam to the background staff, were impeccable, but still some said it would be a case of maybe a few wins, but maybe a couple of other riders would be the ones to watch for champion material, in 2012 at least. The rider from Ravenna's progress has not been as smooth as he would have wanted on some occasions but the effort of man, machine and a well-resourced team are reaping top level rewards as the season moves into its key final stages. Even when he is not winning, Melandri is making his races count. At Silverstone, Marco admitted that his previous approach of appearing to try to win every race at all costs got modified a little in England, given the special circumstances he now finds himself in. "The important thing was to salvage as many points as possible from the weekend," said Melandri. "In fact the two results obtained at Silverstone are worth a victory for the championship battle. For the first time this year I raced with one eye on the title battle. In conditions like this it's easy to make mistakes and seeing as I had to recover some points it was best not to do anything stupid. That's why I settled for the results." Silverstone's wet and dry raceday was a test of nerve as much as anything and Melandri had to bring all his considerable experience to bear just to get away with a seventh and eighth place finish in treacherous conditions. "The two races were completely different, but they were both equally as difficult," confirmed Marco. "Many young riders who are not involved in the championship fight were pushing very hard, so the races were not easy. However, I am so happy because we leave here without any damage and good points." With 200 points left to score for any rider who wins all of the remaining eight individual races, and a mathematically possible 13 riders being capable of winning the title (however unlikely for all but the top four or five) there are both possibilities and pitfalls aplenty for all the top runners. But it is worth bearing in mind that since Melandri took second place in the championship for the third time this year, at Motorland Aragon, the points gap to Biaggi has gone from 48 to 21 after Brno and now 10.5 after Silverstone. With third place man Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) and fourth place rider Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati, now both 50 points and more away from Biaggi, the momentum in the championship has swung very much in the direction of Melandri. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 13. August 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 13. August 2012 For the first time since Assen, not one of the riders in the top three that had entered race weekend managed to score some kind of podium. None came anywhere near at Silverstone, in fact. This was partly because of a wet Superpole changing the usual starting grid shape. Conditions on raceday also played into the hands of riders who had arguably much to gain and nothing to lose by taking a risk in the wet, or riders who were under pressure to get results at this specific meeting. Add-on the weather conditions and a countback of laps in race two and it was certainly a much more than a regular race weekend. These elements were all fuel to the fire at an ever-changing Silverstone that helped ensured that the likes of Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing), Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) would be kept off the podium places they all need to help them in their championship challenge. Well off in the final count, as the highest finish any of these three riders scored at Silverstone was seventh. It was not for the want of trying, as two of the top three in the points table crashed in their attempts to move their scores on at the best possible pace, despite treacherous track conditions. Biaggi was ruled out of race one as a result of his fall and Sykes also fell, only to be re-instated after count back, in race two. Melandri came out best of all this weekend, moving to within 10.5 points of Biaggi's lead. View the full article Link zu diesem Kommentar Auf anderen Seiten teilen Mehr Optionen zum Teilen...
WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 13. August 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 13. August 2012 After a gap of 18 rounds, Michel Fabrizio stepped back on the WSBK podium thanks to a second place in race 1 at Silverstone. For the BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet rider it was his 34th podium in the category, one that came at the end of a race characterized by difficult conditions that made the fight for the win spectacular and unpredictable. Fabrizio scored the best result and the first podium for the team run by ex-rider Serafino Foti, and it was made even sweeter with a third place for Ayrton Badovini in a spectacular finish. 'It all went well' declared Fabrizio, 'and is quite a satisfactory result after what has been a very difficult period. A big thanks to the team which has always worked well, I'll happily take this second place which I think was well-deserved, I wanted it at all costs and I fought to the bitter end to get it!' Race 2 had a different ending however, as Fabrizio started carefully to avoid any mistakes or crashes right until it was stopped due to the appalling conditions on lap 10. Due to the countback to lap 8 Fabrizio finished in thirteenth place. 'I was a bit more careful in the second race, because I saw that the conditions were terrible and everyone around me was crashing, but unfortunately the race was stopped and I finished outside the top 10'.
