In the wake of the problems he encountered at Aragón and Brno, where he only scored 15 points, a fourth and a ninth place for Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) at Silverstone can almost be considered a success. The Northern Irishman, who holds a British passport and can also safely be considered as a home favourite seeing as he spent a long time in BSB, had high expectations for Silverstone but for a variety of reasons he was unable to keep up his title challenge.

Tenth on the grid after two days of qualifying, Rea had a chance of fighting for the win in race 1 despite going off on lap 1. Right behind Badovini just before the flag, the recent Suzuka 8 Hours winner was unable to avoid the Italian's BMW when he high-sided out. Despite the crash Rea managed to cross over the line to finish fourth by a few thousandths of a second.

'Race one was just crazy but I enjoyed it because I knew it would be tough to race for a win, but we genuinely had a shot at it there! I got a bit wide at turn five on the first lap and the rear came round when I hit the kerb and I was dead last. But I never gave up and it was nice to be in the hunt for the win until the last corner, which gave me motivation for race two.'

Things were different in race 2 when Rea crashed on lap 9 but he was classified ninth when the race was stopped on lap 10. 'That was really strange starting on full wets when the track wasn't completely wet - it was difficult for everyone though. I was looking after my tyre at the beginning, which is why I was so far back, but when the monsoon came I started to push a little bit. My crash, like pretty much everybody else's out there happened on the rear tyre, which had no grip. There have been so many crashes in the wet like that this year - off the gas, at the apex - it's getting a bit frustrating. Overall, we took points out of the championship leaders, so it's not been a bad job today. To come away with a fourth and a ninth is better than I expected last night, so we'll take these results and move on.'

With a definite 12 and a probable 14 official entries in the eni FIM Superbike World Championship in 2012, you could realistically expect that the lot of the privateer teams would be a peripheral one, not one found at the heart of the podium or even top ten action most weekends.

Factory resources and manpower, plus the pick of the best riders in most cases, will always tell over a whole season but for riders on semi-official or full privateer machines 2012 has had at least as many opportunities as in any other season in this unique motorsport series. And is it not fitting for the 25th year to be as open and welcoming to all entries as it was back in 1988?

Sylvain Guintoli is the most obvious and high-profile example of what can be done with privateer machinery and budgets in SBK, 2012 style, winning a race in Assen on his Team Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati, then taking another victory for his new Pata Racing Team Ducati squad first time out at Silverstone. He also took the Tissot-Superpole prize at Monza.

Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini are not privateers in a strict sense but they have both now jumped onto the podium as well, ahead of the official BMW pairing on raceday.

Chaz Davies, currently 11th despite a tough start on his ParkinGO Racing MTC Aprilia, has nearly won in the dry at Motorland Aragon, scoring third in race two. He has frightened the podium at a couple more races too, when the fast but fickle Aprilia was on top set-up form. Let us not forget that this is the first year at full SBK level for the ParkinGO boys and girls, for rider and most of the crew.

Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert Ducati) has five career podium places as a privateer in SBK racing, one this year at Silverstone, plus two Superpole successes as well, one in America the other at Silverstone. He is 12th overall, despite suffering four no scores to date.

In his second season as a privateer in SBK racing Frenchman Maxime Berger, Smrz' team-mate, took a career best of fifth in race two last weekend in England, and he is inside the top 15.

Lorenzo Zanetti from the PATA Racing Team Ducati set-up took his career SBK best so far, eighth, at Imola in the second round. His consistent ability to score has earned him 34 points so far, a respectable total in a year like this, and with four rounds left to run.

Niccolo Canepa (Red Devils Roma Ducati) has also scored a career best of eighth place this year, at Assen. He is only half a point behind Zanetti, despite missing out on the Brno round.

For David Salom, despite several big falls and injuries in 2012, a best of 12th is respectable, even if the best Team Pedercini Kawasaki result this year was a fine tenth for Bryan Staring on home ground in Australia, before he moved on to his Superstock commitments for the Pedercini team.

Of all the regular privateer teams in the championship the Grillini Progea Superbike team had the biggest job this year, as they tried to turn the BMW S1000RR into a points scorer on a regular basis. Original rider Mark Aitchison and latest inductee Norino Brignola have each scored points this season, despite the serried ranks of factory and more experienced privateers.

184_r10_race1_podium.jpg

At the most recent round of the Eni FIM Superbike World Championship at Silverstone the younger - or simply less than full-factory - championship hopefuls dominated the podium places on race one. And all of them are products of a system inside the SBK paddock designed to not only provide close exciting races, but to find the best young talent to make it to the top.

Silverstone race one winner Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) was of course youthfully extravagant and effusive in his late push to his first SBK win. But when you look at his background, he has used the Superstock classes to prove his potential, and actual, abilities. As a 15-year-old he won the Superstock 600 European Championship on a Yamaha in 2008. Moving to Superstock 1000 the year after he took one pole position, then the year after that he took his first podium. He moved to BSB in 2010, without the success he hoped for, but a return to Superstock 1000 with Ten Kate saw him score points and earn a ride in Superstock at the start of this season. He took a Superstock podium finish for MRS Kawasaki this year at Imola, before moving to the official Kawasaki Racing Team Superbike squad, where he has started out at electric pace.

BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet duo Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini are both well known in Superbike circles now, but both made their real early career advances in Supersport and Superstock. Fabrizio was Superstock 1000 champion in 2003, and Badovini the champion in that class in 2010. Ayrton had started out in Superstock 1000 in 2003, and after two years in Superbike in 2008 and 2009, he got his big break with the official BMW entry in 2010, winning in utterly convincing fashion. Badovini joined the podium club at Silverstone in Superbike but Fabrizio has a whopping 34 top three placements to his credit, having been an SBK rider for years after winning five podium slots in the Supersport class.

Team Italia FMI is more than just a team, it's virtually a National side! The Italian squad, which was put together by the FMI, the Italian Motorcycling Federation, to promote young domestic talent in bike racing, is currently achieving some sensational, almost unprecedented results in the two apprenticeship categories under the World Superbike umbrella. After the Silverstone round, Team Italia FMI riders are heading the field in both the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup and the European Superstock 600 Championship standings, thanks to two surefire future talents such as Eddi La Marra (STK1000) and Riccardo Russo (STK600), who both won their races on Sunday.

23-year-old Eddi La Marra is in his third full season in the Superstock 1000 category, and he took his Barni Racing Team Italia Ducati 1199 Panigale to a superb win, his first personal triumph in this category. La Marra still leads the table but now with a 31-point lead over Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet), who was fourth at the flag, and 33 over third-placed Aussie Bryan Staring (Kawasaki Team Pedercini).

"I've been chasing after this win for some time", said Eddi La Marra, who has been on the podium 5 times in seven races this year. "I had a few problems in the race and to be honest I wasn't sure I could win, but luckily everything went well and I was able to hold off Guarnoni. Now I have a good lead in the table, but with three rounds left anything can happen: we must stay focused and repeat these results when the championship resumes after the summer break."

While La Marra was notching up his first win in his career, Riccardo Russo powered to his fourth in European Superstock 600. A product of the Yamaha R6 Cup and in his second season with the Federation, the young Italian had a bad start in the first fraction before the red flags, but then made up for that on the restart. This time round Russo held off his closest championship rival Michael van der Mark on the last lap in the battle for second place, only to discover that he had won the race when Belgium's Gauthier Duwelz (Team MTM Racing Yamaha) crashed out three corners from the end.

"It was a tough race", admitted Russo, who also leads the way in Italian CIV Superstock 600. "I pusher hard from the early laps and when I realized I could win, I gave my all. Me and Van der Mark are going to fight for the title right down to the final round, but for the moment I'm happy to be back at the top of the table. A big thanks to my team, they've put me in a position to race the way I like and to get this precious win."
