Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) was never under serious challenge after he eventually took the lead in the second eni FIM Superbike World Championship race at Moscow Raceway, heading up race one winner Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) by less than a second after another 25-laps of full on drama and incident.

Chaz Davies (ParkinGO MTC Racing Aprilia) was third after the three riders in front of him on the last lap were affected by a highside from Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing). Laverty was to retire but Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) recovered from his collision with Laverty's machine, and subsequent crash, to go seventh. The following Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) was pushed off track and dropped back to finish fourth. Leon Camier was a strong fifth for the FIXI Crescent Suzuki team.

Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) had a collision under braking with Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) and neither rider finished the race, which means that Melandri is now in the lead of the championship - 308.5 points to Biaggi's 290, with Sykes third on 267.5.

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 10pt;">"The eleventh round of the World Superbike Championship held today for the first time in history in Russia, on the brand new Moscow Raceway circuit, was marked by some particularly exciting races, once again shuffling the cards and upsetting the overall standings. Before analyzing the races I would like to offer my compliments to Infront and the Russian organisation for their hospitality and the quality of the circuit and its infrastructure: asphalt with a lot of grip, good drainage and a layout which even the riders liked a lot.</span></p>

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 10pt;">"Regarding the Superbike races, from the Superpole sessions on Saturday we could see how the tyres Pirelli brought for this round were capable of placing all the riders in condition to be able to battle for the podium and victory: in fact, the first six spots on the starting grid went to six riders on bikes from different manufacturers. In particular, the rear SC1 mid-soft R302 solution confirmed the excellent performance which had already been seen on many other circuits where we've raced this season. This is why it was chosen by just about all the riders for both races, even in Race 1 which had been declared a wet race.</span></p>

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 10pt;">"My sincere compliments go to Tom Sykes who quite deservedly won his second race of the year, doing justice to his 7 Superpoles of the season, as well as to Marco Melandri who, by winning Race 2, is now the new ranking leader, although with three rounds left to go in the Championship anything could still happen with 4 riders still very much in contention for the world title. Congratulations also go to Vladimir Leonov and the Yakhnich Motorsport team for the excellent podium earned in their home race and all the participants in the Two Nations Cup who gave us a hard-fought and thrilling Championship which Denis Sacchetti deservedly won."</span></p>

<span style="font-size: 10pt;"><img height="350" width="750" src="http://www.worldsbk.com/images/stories/482_r11_biaggi_grid.jpg" alt="482_r11_biaggi_grid" style="float: left;" />The first ever Superbike weekend on Russian soil ended in the worst possible way for title contender Max Biaggi as he retired in race 2 because of a crash while he was battling among the leaders. The Aprilia rider was competitive at the Moscow Raceway in race 1, in which he finished third then in the second race he was making up positions following the exciting early stages. On lap 9, while attempting to overtake Rea in the last braking section, Max collided with Haslam, who was just ahead of him, ending up on the ground. Neither the British rider nor the Roman Emperor suffered any physical injuries, but the crash cost Max important championship points.</span>

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 10pt;">"The crash was the last thing we needed - confirmed a disappointed Max Biaggi - Unfortunately, when I changed my line in the braking section I ended up on some dirty asphalt and I wasn't able to slow down. I saw Haslam drawing closer and tried unsuccessfully to avoid the collision. I apologised to him straight away. At first I thought he had been injured, but fortunately he assured me that he was OK. After the podium finish in the first race I wanted to stay up front. This really complicates the championship but it certainly isn't over yet".</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><img height="350" width="750" src="http://www.worldsbk.com/images/stories/710_r11_sykes_finish.jpg" alt="710_r11_sykes_finish" style="float: left;" />For Kawasaki Racing Team's Tom Sykes, the last few days have been particularly significant, culminating in the best possible way with a win and a second place in the two races at Moscow. The results keep Tom's chances of battling for the title alive as the Yorkshireman is still in third place, 41 points behind the new leader, and they couldn't have come at a better time for the Kawasaki team after his contract renewal for the 2013 season. This will also enable Sykes to tackle the remaining three rounds of the season without any extra pressure.</span></p>

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 10pt;">"It has been fantastic to make a commitment quite early in the season. It's great to be on the good end of the silly season because that is a weight off my shoulders and I think I have proved my worth this year. Last year did not reflect my potential, I do not feel, but this year I was able to demonstrate what I believe I can do. Obviously Kawasaki has done an absolutely fantastic job, an outstanding amount of work and put in so much effort. Everybody can see what we have done this year. I have a fantastic bunch of guys working with me, all my guys in the garage. It is a good team effort, well managed, very professional and I could not ask for any more. That is another reason why I really pushed to stay with Kawasaki."</span></p>

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Regarding the weekend in Russia, Sykes declared he was happy with the way things panned out, with the win in race 1 coming after a lights-to-flag domination on a damp but drying track. "I did a lot of work on tyres on Saturday and we went a slightly different way from most people in race one. The bike felt great. Quite a long race, to be honest, and it is quite a physical circuit. The lap is short but more concentration and physical input in needed compared to some other circuits. But, realistically, we are happy. A first and second, still third overall and the gap at the front tightening up. There are still a lot of points to play for."</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) knew that his first Tissot-Superpole win of the season was not going to help him too much on race day, given his machine's relative lack of pure power and speed on the uphill straight that brings the riders back toward the paddock. He could hardly have expected to have such an unlucky time in Russia however, as he scored a DNF and then a fourth place that was almost consigned to be another fall due to the actions of other riders.</span></p>

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Carlos is now looking much less likely to be champion again in 2012 than he did entering the Russian round, given that he is now further adrift in fourth place and a whopping 75 points behind the new points leader Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport). With only three rounds and a maximum of 150 points up for grabs, this is a significant gap to bridge. Even the rider just above him in the current title fight, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki), is a handsome 34 points ahead, so it may not even take an unusual set of circumstances for the Spaniard to be crowned champion for the second year in succession.</span></p>

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Said the rider who was so dominant in 2011 about his Russian weekend, "We did what we could and that's how it went. In the first race we chose slick tyres - it would have been impossible to finish the race on rain tyres. It was a pity for the crash - I was fighting with Johnny for the position, he came too close to me, didn't leave me room and I lost the front when he touched the handlebar."</span></p>

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 10pt;">In race two, Checa was both lucky and unlucky, as a collision between two other riders put him off the podium and almost out of the results for a second time. "We had to build the bike from the rolling chassis for race 2 as there were some problems with my bike after the crash. I had similar sensations to yesterday but had real difficulty on the straight - it was extremely difficult to pass, or even get close enough to attempt to do that."</span></p>

<p><br /><span style="font-size: 10pt;">The hope for Checa to cling onto now is that last year, over the final six individual races in Imola, France and Portugal, he scored big - four wins, a third place and a fourth. Similar results will be needed for Carlos to have any chance to get into contention again before the season is out in 2012. Given his ever-present professionalism and will to win, he will of course be going all out to fight all the way.</span></p>
