182_p04_davies_ambience.jpgThe rider line-up of BMW Motorrad in the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship takes shape. Chaz Davies (GBR) will ride a factory BMW S 1000 RR next season becoming the new team-mate of Marco Melandri (ITA). The 25-year-old Welshman is the reigning World Supersport Champion and is competing in his debut year in the FIM Superbike World Championship in 2012. He has had some strong performances throughout the season and has already stood on the WSBK podium four times, most recently by winning today's second race at the Nürburgring.

"We are happy that we can welcome Chaz to the BMW Motorrad family", says Andrea Buzzoni, General Manager BMW Motorrad Italia, who will take responsibility for the BMW Motorrad factory team from next season. "On his way through the ranks, Chaz showed how talented and fast he is. His title win in the Supersport World Championship in 2011 was impressive proof of that. And in his current debut season in the Superbike World Championship, it did not take him long to win his first race. We are convinced that Marco and Chaz will form a premium rider line-up, and that in combination with the BMW S 1000 RR, we will have one of the strongest packages in the World Championship."

797_r12_biaggi_pirelli_best_lap.jpgGiorgio Barbier (Racing Director Pirelli Moto) analyzes the twelfth round of the year, held at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany.

"This year, unlike in 2011, the Nürburgring track provided a weekend of decidedly pleasant temperatures which favoured some particularly spectacular races. With just two rounds left in the World Superbike season, the Championship is still wide open and anything could happen with 5 riders on bikes from 5 different manufacturers, all mathematically still within a shout of the title. Realistically, however, the circle is closing in around Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team), Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team). The weekend just ended was definitely a favourable one for the Aprilia Racing Team factory bikes and the satellite Aprilia ridden under the ParkinGO MTC Racing colours, which managed to pull off a historic hat-trick in Race 1 and a one-two in Race 2. My congratulations to them for a job well done. Leon Camier and the FIXI Crescent Suzuki team also put in a noteworthy performance, taking an important third place in Race 2. Regarding the tyres Pirelli provided for the riders this round, it is interesting to see how all 3 solutions which were brought for the rear (1 SC0 and 2 SC1) were used in both Race 1 and Race 2, with an overall preference for the P1060, the reference 2012 SC1 which is also available on the market for end users."

"Pirelli also obtained two important victories today in the racing world which we are very proud of: the MX1 Motocross World Championship with Tony Cairoli and the MX2 Championship with Jeffrey Herlings, which bring the number of titles the Milan-based manufacturer has won in this discipline to 58. On top of this there is the success achieved in the 24 Hour Le Mans with the Kawasaki SRC team which repeats the Bol D'Or victory from April, allowing Pirelli to win the Masters of Endurance, the only non control tyre world motorcycle championship, in confirmation or our supremacy over our competitors."

Pirelli BEST LAP Awards:

SBK Race 1 - Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) 1'55.267 (Lap 3)

SBK Race 2 - Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) 1'56.148 (Lap 4)

496_r06_race1_finish.jpgThe 25th edition of the Superbike World Championship has so far been a perfect combination of excitement, upsets and evenly-matched racing at all levels. With just two rounds to go until the end, in addition to what is now virtually a three-way battle for the Riders' title (Checa and Rea still have a slim mathematical chance), there is also a terrific scrap between four different constructors - for the first time since 2007 - for the Manufacturers' crown. After yesterday's two races at the Nürburgring Aprilia are back on top again thanks to wins by Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) and Chaz Davies (ParkinGO MTC Aprilia).

The Noale-based manufacturer, which just fell short of collecting all six podium places on Sunday, leads the standings on 384.5 points, 7.5 more than its chief rival in both classifications, BMW, who had a nightmare weekend (including an incredible double DNF by Melandri). These results at their home circuit meant they were ousted from the top in both tables. At this stage of the season therefore it is clear that the support of all the riders entered by the various teams will make all the difference.

While Eugene Laverty, Biaggi's team-mate and the already-mentioned Davies (who is heading for BMW next year) are going through an excellent run of form, the German manufacturer will have to rely on a competitive end of season finish obviously from Melandri, as well as the team's second rider Leon Haslam - who is still suffering pain from an injured left shoulder - and the BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet duo of Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini.

The other two manufacturers still in with a chance are Ducati, third but 42.5 points behind, and Kawasaki, 62 points away from Aprilia. While for the manufacturer from Borgo Panigale the gap can still be made up (unlike in the Riders' battle where Checa is 70.5 points behind Biaggi), the Akashi-based constructor will have to rely on some top finishes by main rider Tom Sykes if it wants to win the title in this 2012 season.

001_p12_riders_media_event_news.jpgWorldSBK.com provides a quick round-up of the facts and figures from the twelfth round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

• Fifth career pole for Max Biaggi, who hadn't started from the pole spot since last year's Brno races. Max managed to win race one, stepping onto the podium at this track for the first time. Max in race one also recorded the fastest race lap, the eighteenth of his career: he thus entered the top-10 all-time list, matching Doug Polen's tally. Biaggi is now also the ninth rider in history to pass the 2000 points mark (2026); at the top of the chart is Troy Corser, with 4021.5 points. Max in race two reached also the important goal of 150 race starts;

• The Nurburgring weekend was the 20th on the run in which Tom Sykes qualified in the top-10. During this period Tom has scored eight poles and has started from the front row five more times;

• For the first time in history, Aprilia managed to lockout the podium: it happened in race one, with Biaggi, Laverty and Davies;

• Eugene Laverty with two second places at the Nurburgring, reached and passed the ten career podiums mark (11);

• At his 21st race start, Chaz Davies posted his maiden win. He is the 70th winner in the Championship's history: with his success, Great Britain has now reached Australia and United States at the top of the all-time standings. These three countries count 118 wins each, more than a half of the total number of races run (614);

• With Davies we have eight different winners this year, a value which hasn't been recorded since 2008. The record for a single season is ten, recorded in 1989;

• Chaz Davies became the first rider to win at the Nurburgring both in Supersport (last year) and in Superbike;

• Leon Camier managed to take a Suzuki back onto the podium for the first time since last year's Monza races, when Michel Fabrizio was third in race two. For Leon it is his eighth career podium, and he has also been waiting since last year (and from a race run in Italy): third in Imola, race two;

• 30th career fastest race lap for Carlos Checa in race two;

• Tom Sykes, one of the quickest in qualifying and during the opening laps, in both races slipped down the order and off the podium after leading both races at the Nurburgring. During this season Sykes has led no fewer than seventeen races, winning only two;

• For the first time in his career, Marco Melandri recorded a double retirement, in the two races following his first lead in the championship. In the previous 47 races, Marco only recorded four DNFs;

1029_r12_camier_grid.jpg

Thanks to two superb attacking races Leon Camier finally took the FIXI Crescent Suzuki team onto the podium for the first time this season, joining all the other manufacturers in this particular classification. After qualifying seventh in Tissot-Superpole, the former BSB champion finally showed what he was capable of at this late stage of the season in the team run by Jack Valentine, making its full time this year in WSB.

Forced to start from the back in 22nd position in race 1 due a a problem on the grid, Camier worked his way up to fifth place, running at a similar pace to the podium finishers. In the second encounter things were made easier by his second row position, and despite a poor start - he was 12th at the end of lap 1 - Leon took his Suzuki GSX-R1000 to a terrific podium slot, third after a great scrap with Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team).

The result was a major boost for Camier and his team in view of the remainder of the season, and both are now convinced that they have finally found the right direction for the development of the Yoshimura-powered Suzuki GSX-R1000.

"It has been an eventful weekend - as usual - beginning with having to start from the last row of the grid in race one. The FIXI Crescent Suzuki team did a great job fixing the problem and getting me back out again in time for the warm-up lap. When the race began, I put my head down and just went for it and was soon overtaking riders one-by-one and making good progress lap-by-lap. At the end, I was getting closer and closer to Sykes and I think I would've also passed him, but I just ran out of time.

"I got a horrible start in race two and once again had to work my socks off getting through the pack. I got up to third place after 13 laps and passed Laverty two laps later, but a bit of a ‘moment' in the final chicane, one lap from the end, let Laverty back through and although I gave it everything I had, he just held me off.

"I'm very happy with the podium - it's been a long time - and the result in race one wasn't bad either. Today, the bike felt pretty good. The chassis has always been good and the Motec electronics are working extremely well and all this has given us a chance of running with the best. I'm really looking forward to the next couple of races and hope the team can continue to make progress and we get more results like today."
