1174_r12_nurburgring_09_09_12.jpg

The SBK Hall of Fame initiative continued at the Nurburgring over the weekend with the induction of one of the most experienced and successful riders in International motor cycling. With over 150 races to his name in World Superbike and Supersport, Karl Muggeridge was awarded his silver medal shortly before the start of race 2 in pitlane.

A production-racing veteran, "Muggas" made his debut in World Supersport back in 1998, when he was successfully racing in the British series. The man from Tweed Heads, New South Wales (Australia) became a full-time competitor in 2000 and was quickly one of the stars of the mid-engined production-racing series.

Muggeridge concluded his first full world championship season as Ten Kate Honda rider in fifth place in the championship with 3 pole positions, 4 podiums and above all a first win at Brands Hatch. After a year with Alstare Suzuki in 2001, Muggeridge returned to Honda for three years in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and in that final year he was crowned World Champion with the Ten Kate team. His sensational tally in 2004 was 8 poles in ten races, the same number of podiums and 7 victories.

With these results behind him, Muggeridge was promoted to World Superbike in 2005, again with Ten Kate Honda (finishing 11th overall, with two fourths at Monza and Magny-Cours as his best results). He continued in WSB in the following years, with Honda (Alto Evolution and DFX) and Suzuki (Celani, and then Alstare for the final two rounds of 2009). Muggeridge then switched to the German IDM Superbike championship in 2010, making his debut with a Honda CBR 1000RR C-ABS for the Holzhauer Racing Promotion Team and winning the championship. He returned to victory again this year at the Schleiz circuit , again on a Honda Firebalde prepared by the Jens Holzhauer-run team.

With 62 presences (and 11 wins) to his name in Supersport, 114 in Superbike (the last two at Portimao in 2011 with Castrol Honda as replacement for the injured Ruben Xaus), Karl Muggeridge is one of the longest-serving riders in the paddock, capable of switching easily and successfully between 1000 and 600cc machines, the right credentials to enter into the SBK Hall of Fame.

Matteo Baiocco will step in for the injured Niccolò Canepa on the Red Devils Roma Ducati in the final two rounds of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship. Canepa crashed Saturday at the Nurburgring, fracturing the tibia and fibula of his right leg, an injury that means he will miss Portimao and Magny-Cours. Andrea Petricca's team has decided to replace him with Matteo Baiocco for the final part of the season.Baiocco has just clinched the CIV Italian Superbike title for the second time on a Ducati and has considerable experience in WSB racing, both as wild-card and a full-time entrant in 2010. He has also been chosen by Ducati as tester for the new 1199 Panigale machine. His previous experience, as well as his knowledge of the 1198R and his clear ability made him the ideal choice for the Red Devils Roma team for this end of season. Baiocco now has an opportunity to continue the development work carried out by Canepa, which was bringing good results in the last few races.

Niccolò Canepa is still being kept at Adenau hospital in Germany, where he underwent further surgery to apply a metal plate to help his recovery. The team's thoughts are with Niccolò, and they hope to see him back on the track soon in perfect shape.

"I am really happy about this great opportunity offered to me by Andrea Petricca and his team," declared Baiocco. "Being able to take part in two World Superbike rounds is always fantastic, even though I'm clearly sorry that Niccolò got hurt and I sincerely hope he can recover soon. I already know many of the technical staff of the Red Devils Roma team, as well as the 1198 and I hope to establish a good feeling right away. After winning my second Italian title I've continued training, both in the gym and on the track, carrying on with the development of the new Ducati Panigale which I tested recently at Mugello. I want to thank the Barni team, who I race for this year, and who gave me the OK for these two rounds and with whom I have an excellent rapport. For sure I'll try and get some good results, not only to repay those who put their faith in me, but also to demonstrate that my place is in World Superbike, where I hope to race permanently next season".

183_r12_sofuoglu_finish.jpg

World Supersport points leader Kenan Sofuoglu's crucial win at the Nurburgring puts him clearly in line to win a third title with two rounds of the championship remaining. The result was also a great satisfaction for Kawasaki, who last winter hedged their bets on the Turkish rider to bring the title back to Akashi for the first time since 2001, when Andrew Pitt was the winner.

Just like two weeks before at Moscow Raceway, Sofuoglu was implacable in his race approach and tactics and immediately powered into the lead from the final front row grid slot, with Jules Cluzel (PTR Honda) the only man able to stay with him. Unlike the Russian Round however the young Frenchman managed to remain in Sofuoglu's tracks and finished runner-up half-a-second behind at the flag.

"Before coming here my goal was to win this race," said Sofuoglu, "because I knew if I won I just had to finish the race in Portimao to become World Champion again. I have reached my goal here and now in Portimao of course I will ride for points, but if I can see the chance I will try to win the race in Portugal."

For Sofuoglu a first-ever win at the Nurburgring is particularly significant as he started his racing career in the German Yamaha R6 Cup with a title win back in 2002: "I raced here for the first time in 2002, in a one make championship, and although I have come here many times since I could never win the race. Finally I have won this race and I'm happy about it. My career really started in Germany so it is nice to win the race here."

002_p10_british_riders.jpg

Chaz Davies' win for his ParkinGO MTC Aprilia team was a special one for many reasons, but it also brought about a chance-in-a-million statistical landmark in the 25th year of competition in the eni FIM Superbike World Championship.

In winning race two, Welshman Davies gave British riders - that is riders from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Irish riders who race under a British ACU licence - a total of 118 race victories between them. That is, all the individual race wins for British riders, added up to give a combined total.

The last race victory in the class for an Australian rider came in 2008, for Troy Bayliss. That took the total of wins scored by all Australian riders to 118. The last race win in the class for an American rider came in 2009, for Ben Spies. That took the total of wins scored by all American riders to 118. Same as Australia and now the same as the UK.

So as things stand, there is a three-way tie for the most successful ever nation in terms of race wins through SBK history - USA 118, Australia 118 and now UK 118.

The next most successful SBK race-winning nation is Italy, with Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) lifting that total to 90 after his race one win in Germany last weekend. Then comes...? Can you guess? Japan on 62. France has 38 wins, Spain 36, New Zealand 13, Belgium 11, Canada, Germany and Ireland 2 wins each, Austria, Brazil and Portugal all have one race winner each.
