WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 25. September 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 25. September 2012 Giorgio Barbier (Racing Director Pirelli Moto) analyses the thirteenth and penultimate round of the year, held at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve circuit, Portimão in Portugal. "Before analysing the Superbike races, Pirelli would like to congratulate Kenan Sofuoglu (on his return to the category) and team Kawasaki Lorenzini on their victory in the World Supersport Championship which rewards the rider's excellent performance and the team's consistent work throughout the season. "But the Portimão round, the penultimate of the World Championship, was first and foremost an extremely important weekend in the Superbike class main feature which, despite the uncertain weather conditions, provided fans with two very heated and exciting races. In particular race 1 was ridden on rain tyres by all the riders for both the first start, when the track was actually still quite wet, and for the restart after the race was red flagged to clean up oil left on the track by Brignola's unfortunate crash. For the latter case, in spite of the track being almost completely dry and therefore not in ideal performance conditions for the wet solution, the tyres performed superbly and surpassed all expectations, allowing the riders not only to finish the race without problems but even to improve lap times as the race went on. Clear evidence of this is the best lap, realised by Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) during the last lap, at a time when the track had already quite completely dried off. Race 2, on the other hand, was run on slicks. More specifically, almost all the riders opted for the oversized profile SC0 R874 solution which proved to be a valid alternative to the SC0 solution which was the standard selection here, as well as at Brno, Misano and Phillip Island. "With a 30.5 point advantage over the closest contender (Tom Sykes) and 38.5 over Marco Melandri, Max Biaggi has staked a strong claim on the title, but on several occasions Superbike has demonstrated just how unpredictable the races can be, so we will have to wait and see what happens during the final round which will be held at Magny-Cours in two weeks." Pirelli BEST LAP Awards: SBK Race 1 - Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) 1'56.477 (Lap 16) SBK Race 2 - Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team) 1'44.578 (Lap 5) Total BEST LAP (SBK): Checa C. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 25. September 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 25. September 2012 Eugene Laverty had already won two races at Monza when he was with Yamaha in 2011 but on Sunday he was able to take his first for the Aprilia Racing Team. The win came at the same Portimao track where in October 2011 he had his first outing on the Aprilia RSV4 Factory machine. The Irishman scored the win at Portimao after leading lights to flag from a third place grid position following Tissot-Superpole, and holding off a last-ditch attempt by Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) who had closed the gap right up by the chequered flag. With one round remaining, the two-time World Supersport runner-up now finds himself in sixth place in the standings on 241.5 points, while his Aprilia team now have one hand on the Manufacturers' crown in view of the final round at Magny-Cours at the end of next week. "My first win with and for Aprilia came on my favourite track with a lot of my fans trackside, who I'd like to thank," said Laverty. "Grip in Race 2 wasn't perfect. I tried to push hard right away to gain an advantage and then I was able to maintain it to the end. This year we had some difficult moments, like we had in Race 1 today, but we're finally showing our potential with some good progress at the end of the season". Eugene Laverty dedicated the win to the late Sean Hurley, an Irish rider who lost his life at the age of 25 in December 2011 in a tragic accident near Ballinhassig. In race one Tom scored the 40th win for Kawasaki, the fourth manufacturer to reach this goal after Ducati (now at 312 wins), Honda (113) and Yamaha (74); • For Tom this was his fourth win, and his first from pole: up until now he had started eighteen times from pole (in the two races per round) but had never won from there. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 26. September 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 26. September 2012 At the penultimate round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship held last weekend at Portimão, another rider peg slotted into place as the Kawasaki Racing Team announced it had confirmed Loris Baz for the 2013 season. The young Frenchman, 2008 European Superstock 600 champion, stepped up into Superbike this year as replacement for the unfortunate Joan Lascorz at Donington Park, and soon managed to score some good results: third at Brno in race 1, and then outright protagonist at Silverstone where he scored the first win of his career, the second-youngest World Superbike winner at the age of 19 years, 6 months and 4 days. Promoted from the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup, in which he was second at the Imola opening round on an MRS Racing Kawasaki, the talented young rider from Sallanches is enthusiastic about being Tom Sykes' team-mate once again in KRT. "I am really happy, as you can imagine!" said Baz. "Since I first got on the official Kawasaki Racing Team bike I have done everything I could to stay for the future. I think it is one of the best bikes and best teams so I did not want to go anywhere else. To stay in this team was the best for me. We have a really good base and I want to be strong for next year. I have to thank Guim Roda, my team manager, for taking me in the first place - a young rider on an official bike - and I also have to thank Kawasaki, who also believed in me. After the end of last year, when I had nothing, they asked me to ride in Superstock. I saw it as a new challenge and a new beginning. So I am really happy to ride for Kawasaki again and I cannot wait for next year." View the full article Link zu diesem Kommentar Auf anderen Seiten teilen Mehr Optionen zum Teilen...
WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 26. September 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 26. September 2012 French youngster Maxime Berger will step in to replace the injured Niccolò Canepa in the Red Devils Roma team for the last round of this year's FIM Superbike World Championship at Magny-Cours. The 23-year-old from Dijon is in his second year in World Superbike. After winning the European Superstock 600 title in 2007 and racing for three years in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup, where he often finished in the leading positions, in 2011 Maxime made his debut in Superbike with a Ducati, and he continued with the Italian machine again this year. Currently Berger lies sixteenth in the table with 74 points, but he did not take part in the last round at Portimao due to problems with the team he had raced for throughout this season. Berger, just like the Red Devils Roma team, is aiming to finish the season in the best possible way and his experience on a Ducati 1198R, together with his desire to do well in front of his home crowd, were determining factors in the choice of the Italian team. Berger declared: "I am happy to race the last round of the season with Red Devils Roma. I am sorry I couldn't take part in the Portimao round, but I'll try and make up for that at my home circuit of Magny-Cours in front of my home crowd. I'd like to thank Andrea Petricca's squad for the trust he has put in me and I hope to repay him with some good results". WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 27. September 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 27. September 2012 This year's Superbike season is the 25th in succession and as the rate of individual race winners week-on-week is showing, few seasons have been quite this competitive when it comes to a variety of riders fighting for a race win. The absolute record of individual race victors per season is ten, way back in 1989 when SBK racing was still in its infancy. At that time every round featured significant numbers of hot local wildcard riders, as well as the competitive regulars, so it was little wonder that the number of race winners was high. So far in 2012 we have had nine individual race winners, and the last time that happened was in 2001, when four different manufacturers - Aprilia, Ducati, Honda and Suzuki - provided the machinery. Now that wildcard riders are much thinner on the ground and usually not on the most competitive of machines, to have nine individual winners in only 13 rounds in 2012 - and after only 25 races not the scheduled 26 (given the cancellation of the first Monza race) - is a truly remarkable series of events. The nine rider total started in Australia with Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) and Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati). A first time winner came along in Assen in round three, Sylvain Guintoli, who was riding in Effenbert Ducati colours then (he would win for PATA Ducati later in the year too). Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) was also a winner at Assen. Six races in and four different winners had come along already. Seven races gone and we had a fifth winner, as Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) triumphed in the only Monza race. One round later, at Donington, Marco Melandri gave BMW its historic first win ever, making them the fifth manufacturer to win in 2012, with only eight races completed. Rea won race two in England, and from then until the first race in Silverstone it was one of the existing winners on top. All that changed when teenager Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) splashed to a brave win at Silverstone. Seven different race winners in 18 individual races. Guintoli, Sykes, Melandri and Biaggi all recorded wins until the Nurburgring where Chaz Davies (ParkinGO MTC Aprilia) became the eighth man onto the top slot in 2012. Eugene Laverty then upped the total a notch with his win in race 2 at Portimao. With two races left to run, there might even be a slim chance of equalling the 1989 record of winners before the season winds up in France on October 7. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 27. September 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 27. September 2012 After his heavy crash in Sunday's first race at Portimão and preliminary examinations at the local hospital, Marco Melandri returned home to Italy on Monday. During the last few days he has undergone further medical examinations. These checks confirmed the good news that Marco has no internal injuries. But they showed that in addition to the painful contusions he suffered on his back, the Italian cracked the tenth and 12th ribs on the right side of his chest when he was hit by another bike while lying on the tarmac after his fall in the beginning of the race. Marco will now rest over the forthcoming days before heading to Magny-Cours, where the final round of the championship will be held. According to the team's doctor, Dr. Vincenzo Tota, the injuries will not prevent him from taking part in the last races of the season. "After Sunday's crash I feel better day by day although my back and right side still feel sore," Marco says. "When I watched my crash on TV, it really looked confusing. I do not want people to think that I wasted the races for nothing. Actually when I was on the bike, it was simply impossible for me to do any different, as I did not see Max. I really hope to be fit for the final races in Magny-Cours. I simply want to jump on my S 1000 RR, have some fun and finish the races in the best possible way and position."
