Championship leader Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) is only tenth on the grid after failing to get out of Superpole 2. This puts him on the third row of the grid for Sunday's races. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 9. Oktober 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 9. Oktober 2012 Giorgio Barbier (Racing Director Pirelli Moto) analyses the fourteenth and final round of the year, held at the Magny-Cours circuit in France. "With the Magny-Cours round Pirelli concludes an important season, the ninth in a row as sole supplier of all the World Superbike Championship classes. But today was above all a day for the participants to celebrate, that is, the riders and the teams. Pirelli congratulates first and foremost Max Biaggi and the Aprilia Racing team who have achieved a splendid double win in a 3 year period in confirmation of the excellent work done by the entire team in the Championship these past few years. It would be impossible, however, not to mention Biaggi's two fiercest rivals, Tom Sykes on his Kawasaki and Marco Melandri on his BMW, who contributed to making this year an exciting championship down to the last race. "This was a Superbike Championship which was marked by an extremely battle between riders from various teams throughout the season. In fact, riders from five different motorcycle manufacturers placed in the top five, demonstrating the excellent work Pirelli has done in developing solutions which work well on different brand bikes. Our compliments also go once again to Kenan Sofuoglu and the Kawasaki Lorenzini team for their win in World Supersport, as well as to Sylvain Barrier and Michael VD Mark for their respective victories in Superstock1000 FIM Cup and Superstock 600 UEM European Championship. "Also, this year (as in 2011), Pirelli decided to provide incentives for our rising stars in European motorcycling who participate in the national Superstock 600 championships: this is why the Pirelli Superstock 600 Series was established last year, a Pirelli initiative which once again provided the most talented riders from the various European STK600 Championships with the opportunity to take part as wild cards in the last European Superstock 600 Championship race held here in France. The 3 riders who placed the highest in the race standings were Italian Franco Morbidelli who races in CIV, Brit Lee Jackson who races in British Superbike and Austrian Marco Nekvasil from IDM. These riders were awarded a commemorative plaque and also received a monetary prize as an incentive for their growth and careers. In closing, we are very satisfied with the work done this year in the production-based Championships and we are ready to take on the next season where we will be faced with a new challenge: the new 17 inch tyres which will replace the 16.5" format which have been used until now in the World Superbike Championship." WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 10. Oktober 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 10. Oktober 2012 WorldSBK.com provides a quick round-up of the facts and figures from the fourteenth and final round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship at the Magny-Cours circuit in France. MAX BIAGGI WINS HIS SECOND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP • He is the oldest Champion: the record belonged to Troy Bayliss, who won at 39 years 7 months and 3 days in 2008. Now Max puts the bar at 41 years 3 months and 11 days; • For the fourteenth time in history the winner of the opening race wins the title; • Max won with the smallest margin ever recorded: 0.5 points. In the past, in 2007, James Toseland won with only two points over Haga; • The 358 points of Max are the lowest score for a champion since 2004, when Toseland won with only 336 points, but that year the championship consisted of only 22 races. Max won with an average of 12.7 points per race, the lowest in history since the introduction of the current points system, back in 1995; The close fight for the championship can be summarized with another fact: Max won only five races out of 28 this year (17%). In the history of World Superbikes, only four times has a lower value been recorded for a champion: 1988 Merkel: 2 wins out of 17 races (11%); 1989 Merkel: 3 wins out of 22 races (13%); 1998 Fogarty: 3 wins out of 24 races (12%); 2004 Toseland: 3 wins out of 22 races (13%); Max became champion without being the most successful rider in the season (five wins to Melandri's six): it's the seventh time in history that this has happened, the first since 2004, when Toseland won three races and the title, but the most successful winner was Regis Laconi with seven. The most striking case was recorded in 1993, when Scott Russell won the title with five wins to Fogarty's eleven; Fogarty came second that year. • With his ninth season pole, Tom Sykes recorded the third all-time value for a single season. The record belongs to Ben Spies with eleven poles (2009), followed by Doug Polen with ten (1991). With his thirteenth front-row start of the season, Tom equalled the best all-time value, recorded by Giancarlo Falappa in 1992, Scott Russell in 1993, Troy Bayliss in 2008 and Ben Spies in 2009; • 30th pole position for Kawasaki, the fourth manufacturer to reach this goal after Ducati (161 poles), Honda (44) and Yamaha (37); • Tom Sykes led both races: during 2012 he was in the lead in 20 different races, the second all-time value after 22 for Bayliss in 2008; • Sylvain Guintoli won his third race: a French rider hadn't won his home race since 1990, when Raymond Roche scored the double in Le Mans. Sylvain in race two climbed on the podium for the tenth time; • Maxime Berger scored his best career result in race one: fourth; • Tom Sykes in race two scored the 120th win for Great Britain; • Maiden fastest race lap for Davide Giugliano (race two); • A dramatic end of the season for Marco Melandri: after taking the lead in the championship at the Russian round, in the following races he fell four times out of five, missing one due to injury. Considering only the last three race weekends, Melandri is only thirteenth in the number of points scored, 20, compared to the 90 scored by Sykes and Laverty; • Honda finished their second straight season without posting a single fastest race lap: Jonathan Rea came very close to scoring it in the very last race, missing it by only 0.015. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 10. Oktober 2012 report Teilen Geschrieben 10. Oktober 2012 Few set-ups in global racing have been as successful as Aprilia over the years; with Max Biaggi's win on the official Aprilia Racing machine just the latest in a long line of table-topping hits. Aprilia has won 38 World Championships in GP racing (20 in the 125cc division and 18 in the 250 class), four in SBK racing, plus seven in Supermoto and two in trials. That makes 51, a remarkable number for a factory that has not been in existence for as long as many of its rivals. No fewer than 44 of those wins have come with current Aprilia Racing boss Luigi Dall'Igna at the engineering helm, including even those won by the Derbi brand. The win for Biaggi in 2012 is all the more remarkable because Biaggi had to have an all-new pit crew created around him for the past season, and had only a couple of months to get ready for the start of the season. And what a start it was to his second championship-winning year in SBK, as Biaggi explains. "I am super-happy even now but this is one of the most difficult championships I have ever had," said Max. "Two months before race one I had no crew, so we took this guy, that guy... My crew chief was very good at bringing the right people. He is calm, his way to work was very different from what I was used to working with. He is a good guy and I get along with him well. All the others working in Aprilia (too), so we made the team together. He was thinking about people's character and behaviour. It was a nice story and it started right away by winning in a track that we had never won at before. With the man, a good bike and a good team you can make it, even if the team is fresh. We made something very special and through the season there was some little ups and downs." Biaggi, a character who always draws comment and attention, also spoke of whether he will defend his title or not on Sunday night at Magny-Cours. "So, next year is another year but what is important now is to think about what we did to celebrate with the team, the people who make this happen," said Max, "I think next week - because I need five or six days to stay home and get back to the family and decide what to do. So, no decision now about 2013." View the full article Link zu diesem Kommentar Auf anderen Seiten teilen Mehr Optionen zum Teilen...
