Leon Camier, by his own admission, had a peculiar 2012 season in SBK racing on his FIXI Crescent Suzuki. A relative lack of push and sheer top speed held back his results in the earlier part of the year but Camier eventually took his sweet-handling GSX-R to a podium in Germany and his race pace was often as fast as the podium finishers at other races.

Said Leon, in his regular blog for Suzuki, "The season as a whole has been a bit of a strange one, but we've ended on a very positive note and that's good for me and the whole team. It was no secret that we were struggling a bit to match the performance in the early rounds of the other guys out there, but I knew the GSX-R had potential, so I never gave up and kept riding at my absolute maximum. My race pace was always up there with the best and we showed that going into the turns I was always able to catch other riders, because the GSX-R has a great chassis, but they would pull away from me on the straights and I'd have to do it all over again. Sometimes I was fighting with guys that I knew I could beat, but the level of competition is so high in World Superbikes that it's important to be on the first two rows of the grid if you want to get good results or you end up having to fight your way through the pack."

He continued, "The team worked hard all year to make the bike better and the fruits of their labour started to show around about Brno time and the progress has continued since then. It was so good to be able to fight for a top-three place and we showed how much we'd improved by a superb podium at the Nürburgring. There was almost another one in Portimao, when I felt I had the better of Max Biaggi in the closing stages, but a technical problem forced me out - but at least I was fighting with him, instead of looking at him from a distance!"

Now with no more testing left to do before the turn of the year Camier is going to concentrate on fixing a niggling arm injury. Nothing major he said, but now is the time to get it done.

Leon had other offers for 2013 but still opted to stay with Suzuki. As he said after the recent Aragon tests, in which he lapped as fast on the new 17-inch tyres as he did on the previous 16.5 Pirellis, he sees a brighter season ahead for his whole team. "I see the potential in this even though this is an older bike, but electronics and other things have improved a lot this year. We just need a bit of consistency, me and the team, so I am looking forward to next year."

Just a couple of weeks after the Magny-Cours weekend, which saw Max Biaggi and Aprilia crowned as 2012 SBK champions, Max's sixth and Aprilia's 51st titles will be celebrated at Noale in north-east Italy.

On Thursday evening in Piazza Castello, the heart of Noale, the entire Aprilia Racing Team will meet the population of Noale and their fans to celebrate victory in the Riders' and Manufacturers' championships. In addition to music and light entertainment, the guests of honour will be world champion Max Biaggi and his team-mate Eugene Laverty.

Aprilia's victories in World Superbike this year have helped to make the Veneto-based firm unique in motor sport history. Aprilia is in fact the most successful Italian and European company currently involved in racing, having taken a total of 51 world titles in all forms of racing: 38 in GP racing (20 in 125 and 18 in 250), 4 in Superbike (2010 and 2012 Riders and Manufacturers), 9 in off-road disciplines (7 in Supermoto and 2 in Trial).

These wins also take the total number of world titles held by Piaggio Group companies to 101, because in addition to Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Gilera and Derbi have also scored 50 world titles in their long and prestigious history. In GP racing Aprilia has won 294 races and 28 in Superbike (with 67 more podiums).

Aprilia's history is relatively short, its debut in GP racing only coming in 1985 in 250 and in 1987 in 125. The first wins came in 1987 (250 at Misano with Loris Reggiani) and in 1991 in 125 with Alessandro Gramigni who, in 1992, became Aprilia's first 125 title winner.

But above all Aprilia Racing has since the start been an incredible nursery of talent. The following riders, who have made up the history of bike racing over the past decade, made their debut, raced and won with Aprilia bikes. These include Max Biaggi (three-time 250 winner with Aprilia from 1994 to 1996, Loris Capirossi (250 world champion in 1998), Valentino Rossi (125 champion in 1997 and 250 champion in 1999), Jorge Lorenzo (250 champion in 2006 and 2007), Casey Stoner (250 runner-up in 2005), together with Manuel Poggiali, Marco Simoncelli, Alvaro Bautista and Kazuto Sakata.

A couple of weeks after the finale of the 2012 championship in Magny-Cours, BMW factory rider Marco Melandri recently went on a short tour of Germany as part of his PR activities for the company.

On Saturday, Marco visited BMW's "Prototype Mechanical Machining" department in Munich, which manufactures base engine components for motorsport and development - for example the cylinder heads and camshafts for the RR Marco races in the Superbike World Championship - before being one of the top guests at the celebrations to mark the fifth anniversary of BMW Welt in Munich, one of Germany's biggest tourist attractions with more than 2.5 million visitors per year.

On Sunday, he took to the track at the Hockenheimring to put on a show for the DTM, completing a demonstration lap on the BMW S 1000 RR, with which he claimed six victories in this season's Superbike World Championship - more than any other rider.

"My visit to the BMW factory in Munich was very interesting," said Marco. "It is always nice to meet the people who work for you behind the scenes. I also think it is good that they now know me personally. They know what I do, but so far have seen me only on TV. So it was a great visit and I enjoyed the time together with the staff very much. It was also nice to be part of the celebrations at the BMW Welt. It is great to see all the BMW brands under one roof and I was proud to represent BMW Motorrad there."

"Then we went to Hockenheim. It was my first ever visit to a DTM race," Marco continued. My lap on the RR was good fun because for the first time I did not have to push and race under pressure, but could take the time to see the crowd, which was really huge in Hockenheim. I tried to give them some fun doing wheelies and burnouts. I enjoyed it a lot. The race was exciting and it was great to see BMW win it and the titles."

358_p11_bevilacqua_marinelli.jpg

Ernesto Marinelli, the director of Ducati Corse's operations in SBK, was at the recent Motorland Aragon test to oversee the first group outing of the Panigale 1199 racebike against its main opposition. After much development work and preparation the machine we saw at the test was already in full SBK spec, although development inside the Althea Racing team and at Ducati's HQ will clearly continue apace.

"We will still try to improve but at the moment this is the configuration that we will see in Australia for round one," said Marinelli at Aragon. In what was only Checa's third ride on an SBK spec Panigale, Marinelli also stated that there is still a lot of work to be done to match it up to long-time 1098R rider Checa, who has build up a great relationship with this previous Ducati racebike.

"This is a new marriage, so the rider has to understand the bike and the bike has to be changed to suit the rider," said Marinelli. "We are on this pace at the moment and this is our first time of course on this racetrack. So we have to test some things that we already tested at Misano and Mugello to make sure that the direction is correct."

Of the general nature of the bike's engine character there has been a lot of work put in recently to take the more aggressive aspects of the big-bore twin's engine away, while trying to keep a strong top end. "The bike is a bit more aligned and a bit more powerful," confirmed Marinelli, before saying, "but the air restrictor is still annoying. We have some more revs and more power than before. I do not want to say how much, but a bit more. But it is not going to bridge the gap that we had this year, which was very big because of the air restrictor. But we will reduce it a little bit. Our strength has to come from other areas."

Marinelli believes one of those areas will be under braking, already a good aspect of the previous 1098R machine. "We have improved the braking a bit more. And the handling, but right now we have kept the fork that Carlos likes, but the more modern forks are in the programme of testing."
